MOBILE messaging is a fragmented sector. Every few months or so, a messaging app for the phone launches. Unlike SMS, mobile messaging makes use of the Internet for connectivity and offers a multi-media environment with photos, sounds and even animated graphics and virtual stickers.

“K, CU” isn’t enough, we now have to include a graphical smiley, Emoji (an expanded smiley set), or even an animated avatar that reflects our moods. One-on-one texting is old school; group messaging is in.

Blackberry to offer BBM to Android, iOS devices

BLACKBERRY announced during the Blackberry Live last May 14 that it will offer its once exclusive and popular Blackberry Messenger (BBM) to iOS and Android users this summer.

BBM will be available to iOS 6.0 and Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or higher devices but unfortunately, BBM will only be available to smartphones. That means it will not be available to iPad or other tablets, for now.

The move has been rumored for years and the announcement Tuesday seems to take the audience by surprise. Blackberry also said the application will be free.

There are other messenger apps out there like Viber, Facebook Messenger, iMessage, but the closest rival for the BBM is WhatsApp. Continue reading →
