A fisher’s story

BY Jhay-ar Abadia Book

HIS living depends largely on the luck of the draw. Sometimes he gets enough, at times, less. But Herminigildo “Mang Hermin” Grangatilla doesn’t despair; he even works harder.

Mang Hermin or Kuya Hermin is turning 60 this year. The furrows on his face and the callus in his hands manifest his more than 20 years of fishing for a living.

Mang Hermin grew up in Capiz, Iloilo, southern coast of Panay in the Philippines. He went to Manila to work as a driver and met the woman of his life, a native of Oslob in the southern part of Cebu. In this town, where the two started a family, Mang Hermin learned to fish to feed his children.

“Ang pagpangisda sugal na siya – usahay makakuha ka og daghan, usahay wala jud. Kinahanglan musogal ka (Fishing is a game – sometimes you get a lot of fish, at times, you won’t even get one. You’d have to be game for it),” he said.
