Editorial: Being laughed at

THERE should be reasons why former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo should be placed under house arrest other than what Sen. Gregorio Honasan told a Manila broadsheet.

“The world is watching and whatever way we treat the ex-president would send a strong message of what we are to the rest of the world,” Honasan told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

In Honasan’s mind, if the former president is jailed in a police facility and not in her house, “foreign investors would think, ‘If this is how they behave, why would we invest?’”

The senator used to talk sense, but that was when he dealt with military matters, having led the coups that bedeviled the administration of then president Cory Aquino. But he seems to have overreached on this one. (more)
